The New Jersey Colonials hosted a special event, Passion 2 Play on Saturday, August 10, 2019 at Mennen Sports Arena in Morris Township, NJ. This Health & Safety event was made possible through special contributions by Johnson & Johnson, Summit Medical Group Foundation, JAG-ONE Physical Therapy and the New Jersey Devils. The Colonials are grateful for their support!

Passion 2 Play educated players on a variety of important topics. The day started short presentations by Dr. Matthew McCarthy of Summit Medical Group and Bryce Salvador, JAG-ONE Physical Therapy Ambassador.

Dr. McCarthy has expertise in managing acute concussion, post-concussion syndrome, and other neurological conditions in athletes of all ages and levels of competition. He specializes in using an active and individualized approach to symptomatic treatment and rehabilitation after concussion to ensure a safe and efficient return to sports and other activities. As a sports neurologist, he is focused on long term athlete brain health and promoting safe and lifelong sports participation. “

Bryce Salvador, former New Jersey Devils captain and current MSG Network Studio Analyst served as the JAG-ONE Physical Therapy Ambassador. He spoke about the keys to success both on and off the ice.

Salvador, a 14-year veteran of the NHL, played for the Devils for seven seasons. Salvador had a standout Stanley Cup Finals playoff run in the 2011-12 season, scoring four goals and assisting on 10 more for the Devils. He was traded from the St. Louis Blues to the Devils in 2008, and was named the 10th captain in New Jersey Devils history on January 17, 2013. He played for the team until he retired in 2015.

New Jersey Devils Strength & Conditioning Joe Lorincz, ran a dynamic warm-up with the players. Head Athletic Trainer Kevin Morley (MS, ATC) and Head Physical Therapist/Sport Science Coordinator Chris Stackpole ( PT, DPT, SCS, ATC, CSCS) monitored the action, ensuring proper technique.

Once on the ice, Colonials Executive Directors Bruce Shatel (Delbarton) and Andy Gojdycz (Christian Brothers) were joined by coaches Rich McLaughlin (Randolph HS, NJ HS Hall Of Fame), Shelly Picard (NJC Girls Director, Silver medalist 2014 Sochi Olympics & Gold medalist 2019 Women’s World Championships), Erika Lawler (Silver medalist 2010 Vancouver Olympics), Brendon Herr (NJC Boys T2 Director & Chatham HS), and Alex Velischek (NJC 14U Bantam 05 & 2009 NHL Draft Pick).
