2022-23 NJC YOUTH AWARDS

THE NEW JERSEY COLONIALS ANNOUNCE HONORS FOR YOUTH TEAMS

The New Jersey Colonials officially close out the 2022-23 season by announcing the award recipients for each team in the Youth Tier 1 and Tier 2 programs.

The “Charette Award,” goes to the outstanding Boys and Girls graduating senior. George Charette was a founder of the Morris County Youth Hockey League and coached for the New Jersey Colonials for many years.

Duncan Stewart, 18U AAA – Boys Charette Award Winner

Duncan was an AYHL All-Star and Elite Prospects Series Outstanding Player in Pittsburgh.  He has been a team leader since joining the club in the 20-21 season.  An offensive star, he scored 180 points in 111 games.  Duncan is a top talent with a great a future ahead of him.

Hayden Bright, 18U AA – Boys Charette Finalist

“Hayden was our top line center and played in all situations for us. He is a dynamic skater that not only produced offensively for us but also brought a physical presence” – Coach Scott Garrow

 


The Ray Murray Achievement Award (Boys) goes to players demonstrating the values shown by former Colonial, Ray Murray: hard work, determination, team spirit, good sportsmanship, discipline, and leadership were selected by their coaches.  Ray Murray, was a founding member of the New Jersey Colonials who served as a coach and Board Member.   He was a prominent figure in New Jersey hockey, having started the Morris County Colonials.   Ray embodied the true essence of sportsmanship and promoted strong personal values that serve as the foundation for this award.

 

18U AAA – Matteo Mancheno


18U AA – Hutch McDonald

“Hutch represents all of the attributes Ray Murray exhibited. He is a tireless worker that would do anything for the team and his teammates. He is a determined competitor who is disciplined in his preparation and respectful of his opponents. Hutch is a pleasure to work with and every coach would be ecstatic with a team full of Hutch McDonalds.”– Coach Scott Garrow


16U AAA – Michael Padula

“He overcame a serious injury, illness and worked extremely hard to stay hockey ready.  He always was there to support his teammates.  He was Captain of the team this season – Coach Joe Ginsberg


16U AA – Brayden Messer

“Brayden served as a valued leader and teammate for the New Jersey Colonials 16AA team. Brayden consistently demonstrates a true caring for his peers, and a commitment to a team first mindset. Brayden is well respected by the coaching staff, and officials. Brayden can always be counted on as an individual. He has an unwavering sense of right and wrong, and a strong commitment to doing the best job he possibly can, and a work ethic that has enabled him to achieve his individual goals. Brayden is a young man of high integrity and standards who puts everything into the tasks he undertakes. – Coach Ryan Carter


15 Pure 2007 AAA – Lucien Petros

“Along with being a respectful young man with strong character, Lucien has embodied said character by possessing a team first mentality while achieving the self discipline to work on his craft in order to bring his best to the team. This attribute has not only led to immense progress within himself, but has also had a positive impact on his teammates.  Resulting not only in an exceptional season but earning the well deserved respect of his peers and coaches. – Coach Ilya Yavtuhovich


14U Major 2008 AAA – Brody Hansen

“Brody is a player who is a leader on and off the ice. He leads by his example with a strong work ethic in practice and he brings that desire to each and every game. He is a friend to all players on the team. He is respectful to coaches , referees and represents the Colonials the way all players should. – Coach Rich McLaughlin

13 Pure 2009 AA – Ryan Wu

“Ryan exemplifies what the Ray Murray Award is all about.  His work ethic and positive mindset brought out the best in himself and his teammates.  Whether it’s blocking a shot, hustling for a loose puck, or helping pick up pucks after practice, Ryan can always be counted on to lead by example.  Ryan is a true team first player and always steps up when called upon. – Coach Mike Braviak


12U Major 2010 AAA – Kieran Brendle

“Kieran is a player who plays with such grit and determination it makes coaches want him on their team.  He is so personable and possesses great leadership qualities that his teammates gravitate towards him.   Kieran has a compete level and love for the game of hockey that I admire as his coach.  He has the ability to defend in the Neutral Zone and the Defensive Zone.  His Offensive skills are just scratching the surface.   He contributes on the Power Play and Penalty Kill.  Kieran is a terrific two sport athlete and an even better person.  This is a well deserved award!” – Coach Craig Wicker

12U Major 2010 AAA – Zeller Clark Schoeb

“All good teams are built from the goal out and Zeller was our rock this past season.  Whether to get us a big win or stop a losing streak, he always rose to the occasion.  Zeller was our best penalty killer as all goalies should be and set a great example for all of us.  His calm demeanor and witty sense of humor is why coaches and teammates really like Zeller on and off the ice.  Zeller has a nice future in the game of hockey and I’m excited to see where the possibilities take him.” – Coach Craig Wicker

12U AA – Cayden Hoyler

“Cayden, fondly known as “Sir Hoyler” by his teammates, exemplifies hard work, determination, good sportsmanship and certainly team spirit.  Cayden always comes to the rink with a smile on his face and is ready to work.  He loves the game of hockey and is counted on and looked up to by all of his teammates.  Cayden was an important part of the success the team enjoyed this season, and as the only goalie, his talents grew significantly from the beginning of the season.  Cayden was a pleasure to have this year, and we wish him a ton of success as he moves to first year Bantam.  Thank you Cayden for being a great teammate! – Coach DJ Book


10U Major 2012 AAA – Gus Daggett

“Gus’ hard work and determination make him a leader on the team.  He is one of the unsung heroes on the team.   Gus is one of the hardest workers that I have encountered in my coaching career.   Gus is a kid with high character that is a pleasure to coach. He is not the most vocal kid on the team however he brings a work ethic that is second to none.  He is a great teammate that everyone can rely on. He works hard and comes to the rink with a positive attitude. He is a true pleasure to coach.  He is a team first player. He is loved by his teammates and cares for his teammates.   He has a bright future. – Coach Jon Scorsune

10U AA – Christian Bennett

“Christian is consistently one of the hardest workers on the ice, his improvement of play from being in LTP 2 years ago, to being a steady, shut down AA defenseman, that we can play in all situations is incredible.  The only thing more impressive than his on-ice play, is his ability to be a good teammate. It doesn’t matter who scores, assists or makes the right play, Christian is always just as happy for his teammates as he is for himself.  Great season Christian!”  — Coach Bill Katinsky


10U A – Ryan DiPaola

“Ryan DiPaola  was a pleasure to coach the entire year. Ryan’s superb two way defensive play really help solidify our team. Ryan showed up to every practice and game with a great attitude and always conducted himself as a team first player. Ryan always was eager to help teammates with positioning and assignments while on the ice. Ryan was a great player for the coaches and was a great teammate to his peers.”  — Coach Tyler Lee

“Paden is a hard-working, committed, and selfless team player, with strong skating and stick work fundamentals establishing a solid foundation for his future hockey career.  He is an engaged hockey player, always welcoming feedback and working towards improving his understanding of the game and contribution to the team.  To top it off, he brings a determined positive attitude and a love for the sport that is energizing to those around him.  Paden’s hockey future is bright, and we look forward to watching his story unfold!.”  — Coach Jason Kishbaugh


8U Blue – Corbin Shannon

“Corbin Shannon personifies the qualities that the Colonials organization values in its players and all season has lived by our team’s core values of working hard, having fun, and being a good teammate. His teammates look up to him for his tenacious work ethic, smart-hockey sense, and fun-loving spirit. And us coaches have appreciated his willingness to learn, push himself when he’s on the ice, and help out during practices and games (so much so that many call him ‘Coach Corbin’). Corbin has been a pleasure to coach and he has a bright future in hockey ahead of him, with many years of taking himself and his teammates to the next level.”  — Coach Dan Yacey
