MEET OUR HOCKEY DIRECTORS

Executive Director, Youth Tier 1

Bruce Shatel

Bruce Shatel teams are best known for their work ethic and discipline. Under his tenure, Delbarton has established themselves as one of the preeminent high school hockey teams in Northeast. They have won 11 State Championships, 8 Gordon Cups, 11 Gordon Conference titles, 3 Mennen Cups, and 3 Mennen Division titles. Most importantly, many of Shatel’s players have committed to play at the next level at some of the finest colleges in the Northeast: Brown University, Boston College, Bowdoin College, Colby College, Connecticut College, Cornell University, Harvard University, Hobart College, Holy Cross, Middlebury College, Princeton University, Providence College, RPI, Tufts University, UVM, Williams College, and Yale University.

Shatel has taught mathematics at Delbarton School for over 20 years. He serves on the Rules Committee and the Seeding Committee for the NJSIAA. Shatel has also been a coach and evaluator for USA hockey for the New England District. In 2014, Shatel was inducted into the New Jersey Ice Hockey Hall of Fame. In July 2017, the Star Ledger named him as one of the most influential people in New Jersey high school sports

Hockey Director, Youth T2

Rich McLaughlin

Rich McLaughlin has coached over 30 years at the high school and youth levels. Randolph has won 9 New Jersey State Public High School championships under McLaughlin's leadership.  He became only the 4th high school hockey coach to reach 500 wins in New Jersey history on January 31, 2024.

McLaughlin has received Coach of the Year honors six times and was inducted to the NJ High School Hall of Fame (2009), NJSCA Coaches Hall of Fame (2007), Randolph High School Hall of Fame (2021) and named an NJCSA National Award honoree (2014).  He was awarded the NJSIAA Hall of Fame Sports Award in 2013. 

Coach McLaughlin grew up playing for the Livingston Hockey Club, New Jersey Rockets and Livingston High School.  He was inducted into the Livingston High School Hall of Fame as a player in 2011.  He continued his career playing at Merrimack College.

Emily Janiga

Emily Janiga has an extensive hockey background as both a player and coach. Emily was a full scholarship NCAA Division I hockey player for Mercyhurst University where she served as captain during her Junior and Senior season. During her collegiate career, she scored 151 points (72 Goals, 79 Assists, attend 3 NCAA Final 8 tournaments and 2 NCAA Frozen Four tournaments. She wrapped up her career at Mercyhurst University by earning Female Athlete of the Year her senior year (2016). After graduating she played 6 years professionally in the NWHL, PHF, PWHPA, CWHL.

Janiga focuses on developing the sport at the youth level. Her mission for the organization is to create a structured, competitive and professional environment for girls to develop and feel confident at the rink.

Hockey Director, Youth 8U & ADM

John Phillips

John Phillips has coached with the Colonials for over 20 years from 8U to 18U, both Tier I and Tier II.  He has run the ADM (American Development Model) program in 15 seasons of his Colonials coaching career.

Coach Phillips has experience coaching players from their start on the ice to Juniors and college.  He has trained many players who have had successful college and professional careers in the NHL, AHL and ECHL.

Phillips got involved with USA Hockey immediately after graduating from SUNY Buffalo.  His two sons played through the New Jersey Colonials organization and continued into college.  He lives in Chester, NJ with this wife Kimberlee.
